This is probably the most commonly asked in the internet. I myself had to wait for nearly 3 months and re-work, redesign my website innumerable number of times before it was finally approved.
So what is Adsense ?
In a nutshell, Adsense is monetization tool from Google which lets you put ads in your website or apps and earn revenue out of it. There are number of ways to monetize your website and in my opinion, Adsense is by far the best.
How does Adsense works?
Adsense works on the principle of pay per click or PPC. So if you put some ads from Adsense in your website and some visitors click on those ads you would get paid for every click. It is as simple as that. Some ads, have different PPC compared to other ads. So, if you a Adsense approved in your website, donot go just click on your own ads. It is against the Google Adsense Policy and you will soon be banned.
Here is a catch though,
However, just because you have a website, you cannot just put ads from Google. There is a strict regulation and strict review process before Adsense could be approved for your website. Think about it, why would some one spend money in putting ads in your website, when there is no potential returns for him.
So, as the moderator of the website, you need to make sure that your website is attractive to the visitors to spend money to put ads in your website. Attractive both in terms of contents, visitors to your website etc.
Step by step process to get Adsense approved
1. First apply for a Adsense account for your valid website. Make sure your website is least 6 months or older.
2. Give a valid address of your address for correspondence. This is where lot of first timers do mistake. If you are from India, you don’t mention your house number or building number. A address without a house number will surely be rejected. So, make sure you put the house number in your address.

For example :
This is a invalid address as far as Adsense review is concerned. Even though the address is a valid address in India.
Once you submit your application it will be first reviewed. The first round of review would generally take anywhere between 1 – 4 days. If your application is rejected, it is most likely due to wrong address and/or wrong name.
Your name should be once the application is approved, you can login to Adsense homepage and create your first ads.
There are number of ad format that you can create for your website:
- Text Ads only
- Text & Media rich ads.
- Image rich media ads.
You can also, configure the size of the ads. The ads could be:
- A banner( 728 x 90 )
- A rectangle ( 300 x 250 )
- A large rectangle ( 336 x 280 )
You can decide what kind of ads you would like to place in your website. For instance, if your website is related to sports, the visitors to your website are more likely sports enthusiasts. So you can place only ads which are relevant to sports.
Once you create an ad unit, you get the code, which you need to place in your website at an approriate location, may be in the header, sidebar, footer or below your post. Once your Adsense is approved, your application would be subjected to second round of review, during which time you can place the ads however it would not be displayed till it is approved. Never click on the ads on your website. It is against the Google Adsense Policy, and they can find it out and you would soon be banned.
Design of your website
How many articles ?
This is a very tricky question. I have seen many websites with over 100 articles being rejected for variety of reasons. Also few websites with fewer than 10 articles have been approved. As a rule of thumb, I would say around 30. Make sure you have least 30 high quality and original content in your website.
What is high quality articles ?
A high quality article would talk about a certain topic which would keep user engaged. It would be SEO friendly, consists of atleast 300 words with few links both internal and external links. A article consisting of just images or flash content is generally considered poorly written article from SEO point of view. So, before writing any article, do a little research about the topic you wish to write. Try to use some nice high quality images for which you own copyrights.
If you have downloaded the image from the internet, make sure you have the requisite permissions to use it in your website. You get tons of stock free images these days which can be used.
If you have followed all these steps, your adsense account would be approved. The second review process would generally take around a week. Once approved, your website would have live ads.
After this, it is completely in your hands, how you would monetize it. You would start getting the cheque, once you have reached the minimum payment of $100. The more visitors to your website, the more money you would make.
However, there are number of unhealthy practices, such as paying for the clicks, paying for traffic for your website. These are against the Google Adsense Policy. If they come to know( I am sure, they will soon), they would immidiately ban you. Instead, use social marketing through Facebook, Google Plus, Twitter etc.
